How I got into software development
I discovered software development and it was one of the best decisions I made
Jan 09, 2026

I don't have a CS degree. I started learning to code when I was in Senior Secondary School 2 all because I wanted to build my own mobile games. I tried learning Java but it was too much for my brain to comprehend at the time (skill issue) so I got into web development by using a website builder; wapka.mobi or wapka.com, you might remember this website if you were active in the "webmaster" space in 2011/2012. Good times.
Anyway, during this period, I learnt XHTML, CSS, and PHP. Note that at this time, I was only writing code as a hobby and with these acquired skills while in the University, I worked as a freelancer and built a couple of websites for some businesses and got paid for it. It seemed unreal as I couldn't believe I was getting paid to write code. I was so happy and decided that a career in software development is what I wanted even though I was studying an entirely unrelated field.
Everyday (mostly at night), I would find an empty class with an "okay" internet connection and grind away. I would take tutorial courses, build little side-projects, read tech-related, anything I could get my hands on. It was during this time that I built and launched Kamposa: a market place for students, something like Jiji or OLX but the goal was to enable students trade stuff on campus.
In my final year, I made the decision to drop out, and a couple of months later I landed my first fulltime job as a software developer at a tech media company. Fastforward to today and I have worked in several startups: shipping customer-facing and internal backoffice tools. I love the experience and thrill of writing code whether as a means to solving problems, building personal projects, whatever it is that involve code, count me in. Infact, software is at the top of my list of hobbies and I dont have a lot of hobbies 💀.
Aside getting to do what I love and earning a liveable wage along the way, I have met some really amazing people through this career that I owe a lot of my success to, some of whom have become really close friends. That being said, it has not been all smooth-sailing. Remember when I decided to dropout of Uni? That was the easy part, convincing my parents that it was a good idea was hard af! It took me years or maybe they just got tired of asking me to go back to school over-and-over again. Eitherway, I do not regret my decision and if I were to do this again, I absolutely would.
Also, the job market has been brutal, everyone knows this and in tech especially with the rise of AI. Getting interviews have been difficult even with my level of experience. But don't worry about me, I currently have a full-time job but I am looking for a new opportunity as a backend / fullstack developer. So if you have an open role, please do send it my way. Thank you and Here is my resume for reference.
These are trying times and the best course of action is to evolve with the changes in the industry but regardless of what happens, I don't see myself not writing code in the foreseeable future, I might branch out into other stuff but I will still be here learning and sharing my experiences for a long time.
Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope you enjoyed it.
See you in the next one. ✌️
